On Saturday, April 27, as part of the Newburyport Literary Festival, Lauren Slater will speak about her recent book The $60,000 Dog, which addresses the contribution animals make to the human experience.
Mrs. Slater is the author of six books, including Welcome to My Country, Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir, Opening Skinner’s Box, the short-story collection Blue Beyond Blue, and Love Works Like This, which chronicled subjects such as postpartum depression and issues in modern day psychology.
She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a 2004 National Endowments for the Arts Award, multiple inclusions in Best American volumes, and a 2002-2003 Knight Science Journalism fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During the fellowship her areas of study included neuropsychology and medical ethics. For eleven years the author worked as a practicing psychologist before embarking on a full-time writing career. In addition she served as the Clinical Director and later Executive Director of AfterCare Services. She currently lives and writes in Harvard, Massachusetts.
