Newburyport offers an amazing array of oceanside excursions which allow you to view sea mammals, sea birds and various amphibious creatures in their natural habitat.
As we slowly (too slowly) close down these concrete structures and outdated holding pens, it is still important to appreciate our aquatic cousins and understand how we are interlinked and interdependent.
The New England Aquarium does a great job of both educating visitors and caring for their oceanic ambassadors. Newburyport does a great job of providing different ways to put yourself on the Atlantic and feel the mist on your brow. Check out these boating attractions or visit Plum Island soon.
Kayaking is great exercise and you see everything at sea level. These guided tours will take you down the Merrimack to hang with the seals and basking sharks (no teeth) – or will get you to the Isle of Shoals (on a mothership) a few miles out into the ocean to see these historic island towns by kayak. Is this where Blackbeard buried his treasure? Maybe you will find out.
We took this tour last year and saw some playful Minke’s against the Isle of Shoals Lighthouse. Amazing. Also saw the huge ocean sunfish and some porpoise. Take the shorter cruise if you tend toward motion sickness-but you will remember these trips for a lifetime.
This well established catamaran leaves from the Newburyport Boardwalk and sails across the Atlantic coast at a pretty fast clip. Get the feeling of sailing silently along the waves and sit in the netting area to feel the salty water sitting on your lips and stinging your eyes. Life changing. Available for charter.
Board the leisurely paced Yankee Clipper for a narrated tour of the harbor and Plum Island Refuge. Harbor seals, basking sharks and seabirds will be on the agenda but enjoying the view is front and center here. Jump on from the Boardwalk or charter your own family trip.
Experience nature the way it was intended and treat all creatures the way you would want to be treated. Our golden, salty rule.
