What will it mean to have a UMASS Lowell Satellite twenty minutes away in Haverhill. Only good things for Greater Newburyport residents.
Opening at a temporary location this fall at the Hartleb Technology Center at Northern Essex Community College, UMASS Haverhill will offer classes allowing those with an Associates degree to obtain their Bachelors with a combination of classroom and online offerings. Graduate courses will also become available.
Information about academic programs and courses will be posted on the UMass Lowell’s Division of Online and Continuing Education website, http://continuinged.uml.edu/haverhill/.
Per Christine Gillette, Director of Media Relations at UMASS Lowell, “the UMass Lowell’s Haverhill satellite campus will be located at Northern Essex Community College through the 2013-2014 academic year. The University plans to continue to seek a suitable downtown Haverhill location through this year and next.
As the satellite campus is new, UMass Lowell will continue to work to determine the kinds of program students would like to see offered. The university would like to offer graduate programs through the satellite campus in the future, but will focus on undergraduate programs to start. The majority of faculty teaching at the satellite campus this fall will be full-time faculty from UMass Lowell, with some adjuncts.”
This young initiative will be the first steps to expand upon the existing partnership between UMass Lowell and Northern Essex Community College. Many non-traditional students have time demands making it difficult to finish their degrees. Although online courses are gaining popularity it can still be very beneficial to have time and face to face interaction with professors who have real life experience and contacts in the professional world.
A sample of courses in Haverhill this fall includes “Gender, race and crime”, “Investments”, “Organizational Behavior” and “Dynamics of Interpersonal Relationships”.
Pending approval from the New England Association of Schools and colleges (NEASC), degree programs will be available on the Haverhill campus.
If you would like to learn more make plans to attend an open house will be held at the same location (The Hartleb Center) on Tuesday, Aug. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m.
